Contacting the band

Here is a print screen of me contacting the band. I managed to get the email address through my Brother due to the fact he is really good friends with Joel from the band. I hope to hear from the band sharp-ish and here his feedback on my project and would like to see what he has to say.

Moodboard

This is my moodboard. As you can see  there is a various selection of bands and artists on this moodboard in which I listen to these artists everyday on my ipod. I do not listen to one specific genre of music, If the music is good, catchy and has a really good rhythm and beat to the song, it does not matter what the genre is. For example. my two favourite bands are Oasis and The Courteeners, the genre of these two bands is Indie/Rock and Roll (Which is also the genre of my band); but I also listen to artists completely different such as Drake (rap) Eminem (rap) and I also frequently listen to Yiruma the famous pianist.
To me everyone should not be assigned to one genre. I used to listen to just listen to one specific genre of music, and that was Rock and Roll, from Stone Roses to the Strokes, but now I have broadened my selection of music from Pop (Katy Perry) Rap (Drake) Indie (The Streets) and even classical music in (Yiruma).

Music Video Directors- Michel Gondry

Michel Gondry is a French film maker. He is an academy award winner and is highly respected and well known music producer.  Michel Gondry has directed films, Documentary's films and and even adverts for well known brands such as Adidas, Coca Cola, Nike and Smirnoff. These brands are very popular and to direct these type   of advertisements you have to be a well sort of director and very well trusted director. He first started of as film maker, creating music videos for a French rock band Oui Oui. He was also a drummer in this band. This started his love for creating and directing music videos for bands. During this time, Rock singer Björk was highly impressed with the way Michel directed his video and the style in which he did so. Due to this, Björk asked Michel direct a video for her, this was just the start of a very popular career.Michel has gone over to direct over 7 videos of Björk and from this they have a very good friendship. Michel since then has gone to direct music videos for popular bands such as Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers,  The vines and Radiohead.

Music Video Directors- John Hardwick

John Hardwick is an English director who has directed many movie music videos. He also directed television programs, films and even directed plays. John Hardwick is a man with a lot of experience and this shows in his videos. John Hardwick is the director of one of my favourite music video, "Arctic Monkey's- Leave Before The lights Come On.

The reason this is one of my favourite music videos is due to the fact the video is nothing like I have seen before. The whole purpose of the video is to tell a story, there is no lip syncing, no glamour models, not an expensive budget and just using everyday surroundings, just two actors, a few extras and the simplicity of this video makes it a brilliant one.

John Hardwick is the type of director I would use if I where to create a professional video,  due to the fact he makes the use of his surroundings, doesn't have a high budget, just keeps the video about the objective and creates excellent videos in doing so. John Hardwick has also directed many other videos such as "Arctic Monkeys- Fake tales of San Francisco"and "Manic Street Preachers- Your Love Alone"

Mint Ive- White Straight Line- Lyrics

I am so sorry, But you confuse me,
For someone that who has a car,
I don't like your attitude that much,
You're just know one that's going know where soon,
                          (Chorus)
So what's your problem that white straight line?
Or do I talk to you in double time,
What's you problem that white straight line?
Or do I talk to you in double time.
                           (Guitar rift)
I am so sorry,
But you confuse me,
For someone that who has a car,
I don't like your attitude that much,
You're just know one that's going know where soon,
                           (Chorus)
So what's your problem, that white straight line ?
Or do I talk to you in double time,
So what you having that white straight line ?
Cause I don't ever talk in double time, double timeee
                            (Long Guitar Rift)

The length of this song is 5 minuets and 11 seconds long, the song is 3:24 seconds long where the band are performing the song, the final 1:47 seconds of the song is long guitar rift, I am going to edit the length of the track to shorten the song, Preferably I will be editing that guitar rift at the end, but if that does not work I will try edit the lyric section of the song but that will be the last case scenario.

The lyrics seem to primely based on a girl who is in a relationship with the main band member but it seems the relationship is going nowhere. The singer first says "I am so sorry, but you confuse me, for someone that who has a car" this suggest the relationship is on the brink of ending. It suggests the girl is confused and in the wrong relationship. We know this by the lyric "But you confuse me, for someone who has a car" which means she is dating the man for what he isn't.

He then says "Your just know one thats going no where soon". This could mean he is done with the relationship and that she is not the woman for him. This lyric is saying to the woman, You're nothing special, and that you have not got much going for her.

The chorus then starts, "So what's your problem, That white straight line? this lyric is a quite powerful lyric. He is saying to the woman Is that your problem ? that she is taking drugs or she is just confused about the relationship and him and her. The second line in the chorus is "Or do I talk to you in double time?"this yet again is suggesting he is not happy in the relationship and or with her.

In this song, there is a numerous questions in the song. This is yet again suggesting the singer is directing the song at the girl he is currently dating.

These lyrics are quite deep and meaningful. When you dissect the lyrics and break them down, their is a lot of thought behind the lyrics. Although they're not the most creative of lyrics, there is a direct message to his girlfriend and that their relationship is not heading in the right direction.

What is Andrew Goodwins 6 Points ?

In the music industry, Andrew Goodwin identifies that there are 6 key features which outline a music video. I will be linking these 6 points to my music video.

 - There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visual shown. This means, the visual and the music have to be relevant, and have a meaning.

 - There is a relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.

 - He says that music are often constructed by the link between the visuals and the song plus the artist.

 - Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close ups of the artists gives them the representation and publicity they require.

 - Voyeurism is used to increase video's attractiveness, particularly to males, whilst intertextuality is often employed in humorous videos.

 - Intertexutality references, either to other music videos or to films and TV text's, these provide further gratification and pleasure for the viewers/fans.

About the video- Arctic monkeys-Leave Before The Lights Come On

The video Leave Before The Lights Come On is a very unique video. There is no lip syncing on the video, and the initial plot is not about the song at all. The lyrics are about, going out to bars, meeting girls, having a one night stand and the awkward situation of waking up next to a girl you do not know. An example of this "awkwardly stretching yawning, it's always hard in the morning"and " How you can you wake up, with someone you don't love". The video is directed by John Hardwick. John Hardwick is a famous music director who has directed popular music videos such as " Manic Street Preachers- Your Love Alone" and also " Blur- Out Of Time". He has also directed an Arctic Monkey music video before, so they know he does an excellent job.

The video includes well known actors, the woman is played by Katie Ashfield who is in the very popular and famous "Shaun Of The Dead". The man is played  Paddy Considine who has been films such as "In America" and "Cinderella man". So the actors have a host of experience and it definitely show in this video.

This video has inspired me and gave me a lot of ideas which I will include in my video. The main idea I like is that the video is more about a story and not really focuses on the initial lyrics. I will not completely steel this idea, I will include a few bits of miming but I do not want the video just filled of a close shots of a person miming the lyrics.
I also really like the idea of a lot of transitions between both boy and girl, which helps the video flow much smoother and helps tell the story a lot more and therefore allows it to be more effective.

About My Band

(Here is a picture of Mint Ive playing at Splendour)
The name of my band are named "Mint ive". They are a unsigned band formed in Nottingham. They have been together since the year of 2006, and are arguably one of the biggest unsigned bands in Nottingham with a massive fan base. They are a four-piece band, Will Lillejord (vocals, guitar), Joel Mulvany (bass), Dan Wright (drums), Oliver Chetty (guitars) brought together through the love of rock and roll and music.

The reason I came across this band is due to the fact my Brother knows Joel (bass player) and through my brother I have gained a lot of knowledge of the band, I have watched them at gigs, I have heard many unreleased tracks from them and always have been a fan. Mint Ive have performed at many famous and well known gigs and arenas, for example they played at Splendour in 2008, a well known music festival in Nottingham and also performed at Nottingham's famous Rock City. They have numerous songs on Itunes and amazon. Mint Ive even supported the band "The Maccabees" their gig was shown on Channel 4.

Mint Ive genre of music is good old fashioned Rock and Roll, are the generic rock and roll band, 1 vocal, 1 on bass, 1 on drums and 1 on guitars. The definition of Rock And Roll is a type of music with a heavy beat and very simple lyrics but with a strong meaning, and that is what Mint Ive epitomises. The target audience for Mint Ive try to target is around 18-30. The reason behind this because the lyrics are quite meaningful and are pretty complex. They target this age because they sing about going out on the town, drinking, drugs, girls, relationships and just the night life in general. That is another reason I have chosen this band, due to me being the age of 18, I can relate to the music and gives the meanings of there songs an even deeper meaning to them which is really important effect for me when I listen to music.

They are big fans of Nottingham Forest and are often going to games. They have often said there heros is Brian Clough.

Mint Ive also have numerous videos on Youtube, from music video to even documentaries, here are a couple of their videos on Youtube.

Video Review- The Kooks- She moves in her own way

The Kooks- "She moves in her own way" is a song released from the album Inside In/ Inside Out. The album was first released on the 1st of July 2002, the video was then released on the 26th June 2006.

The first shot we see is the camera facing down at the road and moving forward, the shot then pans out and we see a coach travelling down a motor-way. The first thing we think of is the band is on tour. The next shot we are shown is the band on the coach; Jamming and singing along to the songs. During this video, there is a lot of different locations and different shots which suggest the band live a very hectic lifestyle. The video is shot abroad, there is a lot of shots such as shots of mountains, the locals, and shops.

Throughout the video, the band are in numerous different places in the town, on the street singing with the public, on the beach viewing the scenery and messing about with the band and also beside a pool. Later on in the video, the director starts to film at night, this is to show the busy day the band has had. In some of the shots later on in the video, there are scenes of the band "chilling" with women, drinking beer and again jamming with guitars just having a good time and enjoy their time on holiday.

This video is a personal favourite of mine, due to shear lightheartedness of the video, I would like to create a video of this nature because it doesn't really follow a plot but for some reason it makes a lot of sense. This video would have a high budget which is a reason I can not produce a video of the quality in which I aspire too.

Video Review- Arctic Monkeys- Leave before the lights come on

Arctic Monkeys - Leave before the lights come on video was released in 2006, it is a video between a man and a girl who . The story is about a girl who is standing on top of a high building looking down onto the street. We suspect that this girl is about to commit suicide. We then see her kick her shoe off on to the street when she sees a man walking along. The man instantly reacts to the fallen shoe, looks above, and sees the girl standing over the ledge. The man then rushes to the "safety" of the girl. The girl looks very relived and and shaken up. The next scene we then see the man take the woman to a cafe, for a cup of tea, They are just chatting assuming about the incident, when the girl lays her head on the mans hands, the man looks very confused and wondering what is going on. When the man decides to leave, the woman goes into kiss the man, the man pulls away, and shows his finger, his finger has a wedding ring on his finger.

The man then walks away from the cafe and carry's on with his ways. The man is walking down the street when the woman runs and jumps on his back, he is not happy about this and and shrugs her off, she does not get the hint then tries to hold hands with the man in which he reacts out and walks off in a hurry. The man then starts to get really angry and then walks away much quickly away from the girl.

The woman looks distraught and angry, so she walks after the man in a angry manner, she cuts him off in a deserted alleyway and pushes the man numerous times. The man yet again reacts angry and pushes the woman against the fence to tell her basically leave him alone. There faces are close together and she goes into kiss him. This is the final straw for the man, pushes her and walks away from it all.

The camera then moves to the woman's face, she looks very upset and bewildered by the whole event. She then starts to run away from the scene and then goes back to the same building where she first started. Yet again she sees a man walking down the street, we then see her kick her shoe off the edge of the building in-chance of the same possible outcome.

Introduction

For my A2 media project this year, I will be creating my own music video. This will include a song of my choice from an artist of my choice is well. The artist has to be unsigned which means the band will not have a record deal or under any company. I have searched long and hard for my band and I have finally chosen the band i will be producing a music video for. I will also be creating a digipak for my band. A digipak includes a design of an album cover, a CD design and also an advert for my band. This task will take a lot of had work but also looking forward to tackling this project.
