My media product in some ways does and does not use and develop conventions of media products. Here I will explain why. When you think of an indie video and indie bands, you usually think of Kings of Leon, Oasis, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, and bands of this nature. These bands tackle the indie genre by doing this in there videos. How they do this is a pretty generic way in which involves the whole band, a unique setting and usually a story behind the video. I have tried to eliminate this by doing something unusual and using a narrative with only a very small section of performance.
The narrative is about a man who has broken or going through a break up and he is very depressed and alone. Throughout the video, there are numerous shots of him drinking alcohol and also stumbling about, this shows he has been drinking a lot to maybe cheer his self up and forget about the girl. In the video, when lip syncing is used, the expression of me shows that I am singing this song to the girl who again shows heartbreak and depression. This is where I challenge the indie genre, in many of these bands videos, it shows them as I said playing instruments and singing and this would be the performance side of the video, whereas in my video; there is no performing side to this. There are scenes of me lip syncing the lyrics but no bands or instruments are seen in my video.
Yes I agree this is a very risky move due to the fact when you think of bands, you immediately think of video of a band playing instruments; but I believe the way I challenged this theory can work is well. Predominantly, I wanted my video to have clear story behind this. I wanted to viewer to watch the video, and automatically be sucked in to the story. I have tried to incorporate this idea by filming shots in order which allows people to watch the story very comfortably, with very little random shots or random flashbacks that confuse the viewer. By using Andrew Goodwins theory using close up shots of the myself to establish emotions of the lead singer, and again by doing this allows me to concentrate on a story line instead of a generic indie rock band video.
I understand that to get marks for this project, you do have to have a side of performance, and I do include a side of performance by lip syncing the lyrics. I believe I have incorporated the right balance of lip syncing and a narrative. I also believe the lip syncing is in time and works very well.
I watched a music video, (which I analysed) by the Arctic Monkeys named "Leave Before The Lights Come On" who are a famous indie rock band, but in this video, they also ignore the performance side of the video, and concentrate on the narrative. This video gave me inspiration to do this.
Throughout my video, I used the time of day to connote how the main artist was feeling. For example, the first half of the video is me, drinking, looking very depressed and sad; this was shot at night to connote sadness and depression, whilst the second half of the video, it is day, and here I am cheered up after a night sleep, I have realized what I have done wrong, and hoping to change the problems that have been cause, so by using the time of day I believe I have done this.
So by using an indie song, but ignoring the typical indie rock video, I believe it has been a success. I have proven that a video just doesn't have to be performance based, it can be very powerful, eye catching and inspiring with just the use of one performer in which I have done.
